This is my first post, but I've been watching everyone post their beautiful knee socks for awhile now. I am following the pattern as is with the recommended Regia Silk and I have to say I LOVE both the pattern and the yarn! I'm about 1/3 done with the second sock but here's my most recent picture. I hope to finish the second sock soon and post a better pic.

A picture and a question

First, a not very well-taken picture of my first Clessidra sock in progress. I have a friend who's going to Siberia in about a month and I wanted to make her socks that went high to her knees to keep her legs warm, as she'll be staying there for about a year and a half.

As you all can see, I'm working on the heel now. I have a question though, before I continue.
I had 36 stitches on needle 2 before I started the slip, seed stitch each row pattern. Once I've finished that, the pattern claims that I have 19 stitches on each needle, but I have 18 on each (18 +18 = 36). Did I slip incorrectly? Where do those 2 extra stitches come from?

#2 is complete! After modifying the pattern (and moving down to size 0's), I think I got it right :) They fit pretty well, although I am considering adding a little elastic around the ribbing to keep them sitting high on the calves! I have never done knee socks before, but I think that slouching is a common trend.

About two weeks ago I finally finished my first Clessidra's. Knitting Clessidras was a big project for me. I don'd usually knit kneesocks. This was exception. When I started first sock I accidently knit to it long arm.

Against little faults I am sadisfy these socks. They are warm and beautiful!

In my Clessidra's I use Austermanns Step-yarn. It was properly thin in this model. In knitting I use 2,5 millimeters bamboosocksticks.

Finally finished:

I didn't have to use the fourth skein of Regia Silk so hopefully I still have the receipt. I had a terrifying amount left:

I will have to add elastics to the tops because they slouch like crazy. I guess I should have added 8 extra stitches instead of 16 but I was too lazy to do my own math. They're also a tad too short, like every project I make, because I get too eager to finish. One's even slightly shorter than the other.

But they're very silky and comfy and finished before it's too hot to wear them!

Knitpick's Gloss has been very nice to knit with. I will post the modifications on my blog (for a smaller Clessidra). I hope that Gloss is durable too!

I just finished my first Clessidra. The sock's pattern is easy and beautiful. I start the first decreases accidently too late. In the beginning I did four times the pattern before I started decreases. When I notice this little accident I don't want to release what I have knitted.
In the heel I changed the Moss stitch to the confirmed heel. When I finished the first sock I think this is good. Only the leg is a little too big. I have to sew elastic in the ribbing, that leg don't roll in ankle.

So, now I have to do the second sock....

HEY! I hope you see this post, b/c I can't find you. I'd love to help you with your decreases, but am unable to email you b/c no email address was left with the comment you left on my blog.

Just in case you see this and just don't want to email me. :)

I decreased every 12 rounds (once per pattern repeat) 3 times. Then every 6 rows 3 times.
Then every 4 rows until I was down to the regular number. Unless you've got thick ankles or a bigger than average foot, I would go with the pattern from ankle down.

I finally finished one leg of my socks! I originally thought I was going to have to do one more round of the hourglass cable, but when I tried them on tonight they were a perfect length. I finally got faster at the cables towards the end, so I'm crossing my fingers about working on the next one. I made a few mistakes (most obviously in the seed stitch), but I decided I would rather live with it than have to rip back far enough to fix it. The picture below illustrates something I was trying to explain to my patient boyfriend. One skein (of Knit Picks Gloss) = one ball of yarn = one leg of a knee sock!

I never thought I had little legs/calves, but after moving Clessidra over to my circs and trying them on....they are WAY too big! I used size 1's and even going down to 0's is not going to be enough to make them small enough to be snug. Any suggestions on how to size them down? I think I will cast on less stitches so that I can get to the number I need to start. And use the stockinette decreases as the places to reduce my stitches. Hmmmm....time to look more closely at the pattern.

There's been a grin on my face since I found this KAL yesterday. I've been wanting to knit these since I first laid eyes on them. Now I'm trying to decide on my yarn. I really want a shaded solid effect like Lorna's gives but am not so sure which particular brand will perform the best and be the best value for this knit. And do they truly take more than 800 yds?!?!? Any suggestions?

I finished the first, and I love it.

I'm hunting down yarn to make #2. I used Meilenweit Mega Boot stretch, which I found on a trip to Webs.

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have cast on so many extra stitches for my big calves. My calves are at least 2" bigger than the pattern calls for, so I had increased 16 stitches (8 sts/inch). I think I could've easily gotten away with just adding 8 sts.

For decreases (and I'll write all the mods I made up into one post for easy linking ... but it'll have to wait until after finals).
According to the pattern, if you added 8 sts, you would decrease as follows

You would then decrease once in the 24th row, then every 12th row 3 times, then every 6th row 7 times, and then every 3rd row 4 times.

I decreased every 12th row 3 times, then every 6 rows 3 times, then every 3rd row until I was at the right number of decreases. I would suggest trying it on frequently to see if the shaping/decreasing is following the curve of your own calf.

ps. Has anyone tried knitting this sock toe up? I might try that for sock #2.

But my youngest daughter is going to have a pair in a different pattern.

Would you believe that Clessidra didn't get that much attention while I was in France with my hubbs? :) Too much to see, too much to enjoy about France. The opportune time for knitting was on the plane and on the train. I managed to get one shot of Clessidra hanging out our window in Menton on the French Riviera.

And after the long flight home, some more progress was made. I just learned how to do socks on 2 circs and I think that it has ruined me. Progress on dpns seems slow now. I have heard that people knit in different gauge when using circs...I am seriously considering moving the sock over, but don't want a big disruption in my gauge. Decisions, decisions.

As for France pics, my blog will be updated with those in the next few days!

So, I've been working on the first sock on and off for a little while. I would knit it more often, but the cables don't make for good class knitting (yes, I am a college student, and I knit in class. It's pretty amazing). Anyway, here are some pictures of sock number one:

The yarn, Knitpicks Gloss in Cocoa, finally arrived. It's fingering weight merino and silk, like the Regia Silk called for in the pattern, only considerably less expensive. I love the color, similar to a Hershey's Bar. This is going to be a long term project as there are many more projects on the needles right now. I'm hoping to be able to wear them in the Fall.

What cast on have you been using? I was thinking I would try a tubular cast on if it will be a cleaner look and a more comfortable fit.

Hey everyone I am spencer! I cannot wait to knit these socks! I have yarn at home but currently i am at my parent's for springbreak/easter/visiting my boyfriend and injured my hip. So i am stuck here for about a week to a week and half. I am half tempted to send the darling boy to the LYS with a strict list of yarns and needles. I used Karabella Lace Merino, and made some adjustments to the pattern, as I was knitting a little above gauge. I also decided to keep cable C running down the foot instead of switching back to the thinnner cables A and B. Hopefully I don't succumb to second sock syndrome.

So I started my second ever knitalong for my first ever pair of socks. Yipppeee! Here's the downer, I left work in a hurry to get home, knit and take photos to post on this and my blog and low and behold, I walk through the door and prepare to spend the rest of the evening on the couch happily knitting away before taking those photos, only to realize that I forgot my first pair of socks in my desk at work. Arrrggghhh!

I'll have to take photos and knit some more tomorrow. I'm using Knit Picks gloss in pumpkin, sweeeett! It's a beautiful yarn, I actually bought some more to do a couple other pairs.

I was really frustrated when I got 2 rows past the ribbing and had to frog because they were too small. Boo. Now the pattern is becoming more intuitive and fun, thankfully!

I also already broke a needles, though. Double boo to 2.25 mms! I'm using one 2.75 mm. Hopefully Elizabeth Zimmermann is right and it won't make a difference.

Ah, it is here...my KnitPick's Gloss! I was getting nervous that it might not make it to me before I left town, but the mailman saved the day today! I was torn between a couple colors of Gloss, but am in love with the Pumpkin, it turned out to be a great choice for me. Time to get to ballwinding and testing out the pattern on my size 1's. Well, I did what I always do, stopped paying attention. I noted the pattern of leg decreases and proceeded to go forth, pausing only to check the number of stitches before the k2tog on each decrease row.

Doing so, I failed to see that from decrease row 6 onwards, the amount of rows between decreases is reduced.

I had just finished decrease row 10.

The green stitch marker shows the point at which the pattern is still correct. Needless to say, I am pretty bummed out. I am not finding the pattern hard so much as time consuming... and this setback isn't helping to cheer me up.

So, those who have made it past the ankle shaping: is there any way I can salvage this knitting? The sock still seems to conform well to the shape of my leg, though the decrease section doesn't curve as prettily as in the knitty picture. I am fairly resigned to ripping, but I thought I would ask your opinion first.

I'm Elaine and am just getting ready to start my socks. I am so excited to be a part of this knitalong. This will be my first knitalong, so bare with me. I have only been knitting about a year and a half. I fell in love with these socks the minute I saw them on Knitty.
I have a question already.....lol.
I was reveiwing the pattern and understand the hourglass cable. But when it coomes to the "Oh so simple looking "A", "B" and "C" cables, that's where I'm stumped. Do I do the cables the same as the legend for the hourglass cable? Or what? I don't see a legend for them. This is probably a stupid question and probably so simple. Sort of like if it was a snake it probably would have bit me several times already!
ANy help on this would be greatly appreciated.

For some reason, knitting kneesocks has been on my brain since Christmas. I saw Clessidra and I knew I had to cast-on!

I've been knitting for about four years now, but this is my first ever knit-along. I've got a bad habit of keeping too many projects on the needles at the same time - I've never started a project because I didn't have anything else to work on...I start something because it catches my eye. My sister and my friends call it knitting ADD, and it's bad. I've also never completed a full pair of socks. I've made three separate socks, but never a complete pair of socks. My hope is that by being part of a knit-along, I'll be motivated to complete a full pair.

I'm using the KnitPicks Essential in burgundy - if they come out well, I'd like to make a second pair in dusk for my mom for Mother's Day.

Thanks for having me - I'll post pictures ASAP of my progress (which isn't far, considering I cast-on on Wednesday).

I just ordered my yarn for Clessidra! Being the economical knitter that I am (on most occasions anyways), I went for KnitPick's Gloss in Pumpkin. I plan on these socks being my traveling knitting project when I vacation to France this month....I hope to get some great scenic knitting shots to share on this blog!

I will have to knit these fast enough to wear this Spring before things heat up here in the Midwest! Looking forward to the KAL, I have been enjoying everyone's pics.

Hello! This is my first time doing a knitalong on Blogger, and I'm excited. (Incidentally, I'm also hoping this will post successfully. My personal blog has been giving me errors...eep. But I'm thinking that might have something to do with my domain.)

This will also be the first time I've attempted complicated cables.

I'm really itching to get started, but I'm determined to first finish the sweater I'm working on. If I don't, I'm afraid I won't get back to it! Hopefully it won't be more than a week.

The yarn I have is Rio de la Plata superwash Merino Sock. I think this is a new yarn. I'm VERY excited - it's gorgeous and soft.

The green is actually a little less yellow than it looks there.

Anyway, glad to be here! It's great to see everyone else's progress. :)

Sooo...because you slip the last cable section to become the start of the next round for the ankle shaping, did everyone who's gotten that far begin that cable's next twist one row earlier when it came due for the others? Or should I still treat it like it's the end of the last row, since it belongs to that part "in pattern?"

I haven't seen anyone else mention a concern about this..

Greetings All!

I fell in love over Clessidra as soon as I saw the new Knitty, and found to my utter surprise that the only sock yarn in my stash with sufficient quantities was Regia Silk in a soft gray. I flip-flopped for awhile since I doubted that gray would do much for my already pasty legs, but when it came time to pick up stitches for a sweater-in-progress, I cast on for Clessidra instead.

This isn't the first time I have done cables, but I am finding the teeny traveling cables challenging... it is hard to keep the reverse stockinette areas as even as I would like. Nevertheless, I had the chart memorized somewhere around the third leg decrease and things are moving fairly smoothly.

At the time of this picture I think I am just past the 8th leg decrease.

Some of you have stated concerns about your calves being more curvaceous than the designer's... my worry is the opposite: I have spindly legs, and while the sock seems to stay up fine when I test it out, I worry that in practice it will quickly sag. Is anyone considering sewing in elastic thread afterwards?

Anyway, I am happy to have found you all! I am drooling over all your luscious colours. Thanks for the inspiration!

I actually finished this sock on Friday, the 23rd shortly before 5pm. Of course, I immediately cast on for her mate because with this sock, there is no SSS. The plan is to knit the second sock until I am nearly out of yarn. By then, I will have placed my put-off Knitpicks order and the yarn should be nearly to my doorstep. Although I moaned all winter long about wanting spring to get here NOW, Clessidra has me almost yearning for winter again so that I can enjoy the work.

So, how are YOUR Clessidras coming along?

Slowly But Most Definately Surely

I would have reached further if not for: 1) having to wait exactly 2 weeks for my yarn to arrive at my very slow Post Office; 2) watching a Cricket Match between the West Indies and Ireland (I took pictures); 3) helping my brother and 2 of his friends cook for some guests of ours. But I have made very good progress nonetheless (cool I spelled that right!)

Oh, and sorry for the bad pic, I took it with my phone. The Yarn is the one called for, Regia Silk, in Chocolate. It looks much better in person (but my desk doesn't).

I just finished the first decrease round, so I thought I would share pictures of how it's shaping up! It's not perfect, but I'm slowly getting there. Knitting the cables is going faster than I expected, although I think it will still take a while to finish. The yarn is actually much more dusty blue and less purple than this picture makes it look.

Confusion

Needles are confusing.

So I cast on with Crystal Palace dpns, size 1 1/2 (2.5 mm) because that was the only size my LYS had in stock at the time. I thought, how much difference can a 1/4 of a mm make? I'm using Koigu for now, by the way.

Working on the ribbing, I decided that it was a little too loose for a sock. So I thought I'd try casting on with my Addi circulars in size 1. Lo and behold, the package says that Addi 1's are also 2.5 mm. Is that right? How can US sizes not even be standard? They seem thinner than the dpn's, but I doubt I can judge a 1/4 mm.

Now I don't know what to do. Maybe Koigu is too thin to use with 1's? I don't know. The mysteries of making socks fit gives me a headache for some reason...But then, I had also wanted to make Eunny's entrelac socks from the new Interweave, and those use Koigu with size 1's. Bleargh. I suppose this explains why my Jaywalker sock turned out a little loose, too. I am so disillusioned! ;)

Pattern corrections

One of our KAL-ers, Jill, has discovered a correction to the pattern! She passed the information on to the designer, Gabriella, who in turn asked if I would post the corrections here at the Knitalong. Here they are, fair knitters!

In the Leg Pattern Round: very last part says "work Round 1 of Cable B." It should read "work NEXT Round of Cable B."

Second is in the Gusset section, Needle 4: "...pick up and k 19 sts along edge of heel flap, k first 20 sts of bottom of heel flap. 31 sts; this needle will be designated Needle 4." This should read as follows: "...pick up and k 19 sts along edge of heel flap, k first 10 sts of bottom heel flap. 31 sts; this needle will be designated Needle 4."

Pattern Question

I started my first sock this weekend, and I'm just beginning the leg pattern rounds. For all of you who are past this point, I want to double check that the last set of stitches is "Round 1 of Cable B" and not really "next round of Cable B." I can't get mental picture of how that fits into the pattern, and I'd like to double check before I have to rip out several rounds. Thanks!

Also, a BIG thanks to Jill for all of the tips and encouragement (and colored chart) for knitting cables. It's such a big help!

Progressing quickly

From Friday being midway to the 4th leg decrease to Monday being almost done with the Chart C cables on the ankles. Once I found my rhythm for this knit, she has moved along quickly.

My calves measure 15.5" but I have made no changes to the pattern whatsoever. I keep remeasuring them to be sure I really can read the tape measure correctly. Clessidra feels like a dream on, just perfectly snug as knee socks should be. They are not binding tight as I feared they might be. It will be a long summer with these tucked in a drawer waiting for the cold, snowy weather. I am already planning to knit at least 2 more pairs of these: one in a royal purple for my teen dd and a pair in green for me to match my favorite nightgown!

So - here's a progress photo of sock #1, using my green & gray Cervinia Calzetteria yarn. In person, the color keeps making me think of kosher deli pickles, which are sort of grayish inside with the dark green skins. Ok, I'm weird. I do love those pickles though. ;)

You can see how the yarn competes with the stitch pattern; they actually do look better in person. Will try to get better pix as I go along. Knit knit knit!

Hello!

This is how far I've come with Clessidra knee sock. The colour is more dark green than in this photo. The yarn is from Marks & Kattens; Strompe & Jumpergarn (shade 1753).
I'm starting to get the hang of the pattern now. First time round it became a total mess and I had to redo it. I had printed out the pattern from my computer in such a way that the hourglass cable didn't fit on the paper and I kept knitting the cable without the two first stitches in every round. I've been astutely ignoring almost everything and anything that I should be getting done this weekend, so that I can continue to knit on this beautiful pattern. Do I care that my hands are a wee bit sore/cramping b/c I'm in poor knitting condition from lack of work out? NO.

I love how it's turning out and I'm happy with the way I increased. I love how the ribbing flows into my cables... I'm not sure if it would've happened that way if I had increased a different way.

Also, FYI, when I got to the leg decrease section, the pattern says

Leg Decrease Round 1: K5, k2tog, k4, work in pattern to last marker on Needle 3, k4, k2tog, k5; work in pattern to end. 108 sts.
Work 11 rounds in pattern.

What I did:
Leg Decrase Round 1: K9, k2tog, k8, work in pattern to last marker on needle 3, k8, k2tog, k9; work in pattern to end. 124 sts.

Hi everyone! I love this pattern... so pretty. My knitting time has recently suffered a significant trauma (as I started my doctoral program) but I couldn't stop myself from casting on for this pattern as soon as I had a free minute.

Problem: I have big calves, which Gabriella so nicely describes as 'extra curvy.' To account for the extra girth, I've cast on an extra 16 sts (for a total of 92 sts) instead of the 76. After I finished the ribbing section, I realized I was stumped for the next row:

Next Round: K2, [p2, m1, k2, m1] 4 times, p2, [k2, m1, p2, m1] 5 times, k2, [p2, m1, k2, m1] 4 times, p2, [k2, m1, p2, m1] 4 times. 110 sts.

So, should I end up with 126 sts (110 sts as pattern notes + 16 extra that I cast on?) Or should I have a proportionate # more of increases too?

If you check my personal knitting blog, you'll see that I am cursed by being a wee bit impatient. I ran into this problem early this afternoon, and couldn't wait around for the answer. What I've bravely (or stupidly... depending on how this works out) forged ahead and done was this:

Next Round: K2, [p2, m1, k2, m1] 4 times, p2, k2, p2 [k2, m1, p2, m1] 5 times, k2, p2, k2, [p2, m1, k2, m1] 4 times, p2, k2, p2 [k2, m1, p2, m1] 4 times, k2, p2. 126 sts.

I figured that I don't need more than 2 inches added to the circumference, and additional increases would be overkill. What do you all think? Would you have done something different?

Hi everybody! I've only been knitting socks for a few weeks now, but I'm in love with this pattern and am dying to try it. My Knit Picks Gloss yarn came in today, and it's a gorgeous blue. I'm trying to write a big paper for school, but as soon as the draft is done I'm casting on. I've only done cables once, so if anyone has tips for doing these socks without the cable needle, I'll welcome them!

I love these socks - but, I could use some help on yarn choices. I have a weird thing going with socks...I haven't managed to finish even one sock yet, after trying a couple patterns. So, I don't really even know if they'll fit me...

But anyway. I'd love to use the Regia, but I can't find any around here. Can anyone think of some solid color yarns to sub in that wouldn't require too much pattern doctoring?

Thanks, Glenna for letting me join in the fun! Here is my Clessidra late last night. She has now passed the 3rd leg decrease and will see the fourth in about an hour. I'm using Knitpicks Bare 100% merino sockweight, US 1s and loving this knit so much!

About me and socks, well -- I am so far not quite the sockaholic that I know some are, but I always appreciate an eyecatching complex stitch pattern and great "lines." I'm also not very big on the super variegated yarns that tend to dominate the sock world, but since utterly solid yarn doesn't tempt me much either, I find myself gravitating to combinations of somewhat subtler variegations or ombres -- and then jamming them into complex stitch patterns. I know the 2 qualities compete with each other, but heck...I'm goin' with it for now.

I have started these socks with some stash yarn that was gifted to me by my wonderful fiance last Decemberween. Fittingly, it's Italian yarn -- good old Cervinia Calzetteria in Verona (bottle green/pearl gray). My needles are size 0. Progress will be languid...so far I've done the top rib and 9 pattern rows. I'll add a pic in a later post. :)

I just wanted to chirp in and say hallo and that I am on my way to start knitting - I have ordered yarn. I found a Opal-yarn in a solid color that I hope will work. I tried to look for Regia silk here in Sweden but with no luck. So soon, very soon I will start knitting these lovely socks.

It is however good that I didn't have any solid colors at home. Because thus I get time enough to finish the socks in Jitterbug that I am knitting right now. I don't mind having several WIPs on the go (and boy - do I already have that), but once in a while it would be nice to finish something too.

As soon as I saw this pattern on knitty.com, I had to knit these luscious knee socks. Who doesn't need a pair of sexy knee socks. Off to the local yarn shop I went. "Regia Silk" she said, "no one would pay that much for socks!". Needless to say, she didn't have the yarn, nor was she going to get it. Have you heard anything so insane. "I would buy it!" I told her. Oh well, since I just had to start right away, my first pair of Clessidra will be in plain ol' regular Regia...sexy burgundy of course. Many thanks to Gabriella for offering up this pattern on Knitty!

So far it is knitting up just beautifully and I can't wait to get home from work each day to knit. I am finding that I really have to be sure to mark each row as I complete it so I don't get lost. There are already many pencil marks on my charts. One day someone should invent an easier way to keep track.

Would love to hear what yarns other people are using, and where I can get them in Canada.
